De La Salle English Department: We aim to develop in each pupil the skills of communication, orally and in writing, catering for the individual talents of each pupil to enable him to achieve the best possible grades in public examinations and to be of service to society. We aim to foster pupils' appreciation and enjoyment of literature to enhance their capacity for making judgments of a social, moral and aesthetic nature and thus to come to a deeper understanding of themselves and of the world in which they live.Reading is used as the building block to help pupils develop their English skills. Linguistic Phonics is completed with all Year Eight pupils in order to help them in decoding and sounding out words. We ask parents to encourage their children to read at home and we encourage pupils to borrow books from the school library and give them the opportunity to do so. After School Clubs for Key Stage Three and GCSE exam classes are provided and prove useful in improving pupils' motivation and enthusiasm.
The school has proudly produced four successful Christmas plays with a cast of 40+ pupils. Drama helps develop pupils’ confidence and communication skills. Pupils also have the opportunity to watch live theatre performances on plays relating to their course of study as well as plays relating to the themes of moral and social interest, such as growing up, bullying and mental health.
