Citizen Replay Theatre came to De La Salle High School on Thursday 3rd March to perform Vincent Higgins’ play, Citizen. The play was set in the future and explored the issue of immigration in a changing society, very different from the society we are familiar with today. It considered how difficult it would be for potential immigrants to gain access to their chosen country in a world that had been faced with serious food shortages and where Bono was the president of our country!
The play was entertaining as it was dealing with the near future and the topics were relevant to today’s society where so many people move countries in order to improve their quality of life. In a sense it was about migration and the potential problems of food shortages and overcrowding.
There were three actors in total and the acting was excellent with the three constantly changing characters and roles throughout the hour long show. Their characters ranged from cleaners to immigration officers to migrants themselves.
Overall the play was good and because the characters were constantly changing you never knew what was coming next. In fact the scenes involving the immigrants were at times quite moving. I would give this play 4/5.
